Buying guide
Type 2 SPDs are fitted at distribution boards and consumer units to protect the installation from switching surges and the effects of nearby lightning. The device must suit the earthing system: on a TN-C-S (PME) supply the network's neutral and earth are combined in the supply cable and separated at the origin of the installation.
Choose single phase or three phase to match the board, and check whether you need a remote signalling contact.
Questions
- How do I know the earthing system?
- Check the supply and the installation certificate. TN-C-S (PME) has a combined neutral and earth from the network; TN-S has a separate earth, often the cable sheath; TT uses an earth electrode at the property.
- Where does a Type 2 SPD go?
- At the distribution board or consumer unit, as close to the origin of the installation as practical, with short connecting leads.
- Do I also need a Type 1 device?
- Where the building has a lightning protection system or an overhead line supply, a Type 1+2 device at the origin is usually required. Check BS 7671 for your installation.
