Buying guide

Yellow means 110V in the IEC 60309 colour code. On UK construction sites, portable tools run on reduced low voltage: 110V from a centre-tapped site transformer, so no conductor is more than 55V from earth.

16A suits most hand tools; 32A suits larger equipment and site distribution.

Questions

What do the plug colours mean?
Yellow is 110V, blue is 230V single phase and red is 400V three phase.
Why 110V on site?
Reduced low voltage limits the shock risk from damaged leads and tools: with the supply centre-tapped to earth, the voltage to earth is 55V.
Are 16A and 32A plugs interchangeable?
No. The pin sizes and the earth position differ, so a plug only fits a socket of the same current and voltage.
