Buying guide
A door-interlocked isolator protects whoever opens the enclosure: the handle holds the door shut until the switch is off. They are often used as the main isolator of a motor starter, a pump control panel or a piece of plant.
AC-23 is the utilisation category for switching motors and other highly inductive loads, so these switches can make and break a motor circuit under load within their rating.
Questions
- What is the difference between AC-22 and AC-23?
- AC-22 covers mixed resistive and inductive loads; AC-23 covers motors and other highly inductive loads, which are harder to switch. A switch's AC-23 current is usually lower than its AC-22 current.
- Do door-interlocked isolators switch the neutral?
- Some do. Use the Neutral filter to choose between a switched neutral, a neutral link or no neutral.
- Can an authorised person open the door with the switch on?
- Check the datasheet: many door interlocks have a defeat feature that lets an authorised person open the door with a tool.
