Buying guide

A changeover switch connects a load to one supply or the other - typically the mains or a standby generator - and never to both at once, so a generator cannot feed back into the network.

Manual switches have an I - 0 - II handle; door-interlocked versions sit in an enclosure that cannot be opened while the switch is on; automatic transfer switches move the load when the mains fails. Where a generator has its own neutral, a changeover that also switches the neutral is usually specified.

Questions

Why use a changeover switch with a generator?
It makes sure the load is connected to the mains or the generator, never both, so the generator cannot feed back into the network and the two supplies are never paralleled.
Manual or automatic?
A manual switch needs someone to move the handle. An automatic transfer switch changes over when it detects a mains failure, which suits unattended sites and critical loads.
What current rating do I need?
At least the full-load current of the circuit being switched. Check the utilisation category too: AC-23 where motors are switched.
