Buying guide
A sheet steel enclosure stands up to knocks better than plastic and is the usual choice in plant rooms, workshops and on machinery. As a metal enclosure it must be connected to the protective conductor.
For wet or corrosive areas, compare the IP rating and consider stainless steel or insulated enclosures, which do not rust if the finish is damaged.
Questions
- Does a metal isolator need an earth connection?
- Yes. A metal enclosure is an exposed conductive part and must be connected to the circuit protective conductor.
- Metal or insulated plastic?
- Metal resists impact and suits industrial areas. Insulated plastic needs no earth connection of its own, does not corrode and suits most indoor and outdoor uses.
- Are other materials available?
- Yes. Change the Material filter to see insulated plastic, die-cast aluminium and stainless steel enclosures.
