Typical applications
Extension boxes are the answer to a problem every panel builder meets eventually: the gear fits, but the cables do not. Adding an extension box gives you somewhere to bring in and gland a heavy multicore, land incoming tails, house a terminal rail or isolator, or simply gain bending space in front of a crowded back plate. They are widely used when an existing installation is extended, when a machine is upgraded and picks up more field wiring, or when a retrofit adds metering, drives or communications to a panel that was sized years ago. Because the box carries the same IP65 sealing and steel construction as the enclosures it serves, the assembly keeps its protection rating once the joint and entries are properly made off. Compliance
IP65 means dust-tight, with protection against low pressure water jets from any direction. The rating applies to the extension box itself; the protection of the finished assembly also depends on how the box is joined to the enclosure and how the cable entries are made, so use correctly rated glands and seal the joint properly.
