Direct current does not self-extinguish the way a.c. does, which is why a failed varistor on a PV string can start a fire rather than simply stop working. The DG M YPV SCI 1000 combines Type 2 protection for 1000V d.c. arrays with DEHN's patented SCI disconnection and short-circuiting device, so a module reaching end of life is isolated safely without drawing an arc.

Typical applications
Fit it on the d.c. side of a PV installation, in the array junction box or at the inverter d.c. input, on commercial rooftop systems, ground-mounted arrays, agricultural and industrial roof installations, and PV on buildings with a lightning protection system. Arrays present a large collecting area on an exposed roof, so d.c. surge protection is normally the first thing specified alongside the inverter.
Compliance
Tested as a Type 2 photovoltaic SPD to EN 50539-11, with UL and CSA approvals, a UL 94 V-0 enclosure and IP20 protection for mounting inside an enclosure. BS 7671 requires the risk from transient overvoltages to be assessed, and the d.c. side of a PV system is normally protected as well as the a.c. side.
